Visa free tourist entry for US citizens (residente transitorio, turista): Tourist status does not authorize work in Argentina. The former reciprocity entry fee for US citizens no longer applies. A visitor who qualifies under a temporary residence category can apply for it from inside Argentina through the RADEX system (cambio de categoría, Decreto 616/2010, Art. 20 a)).

Living in Argentina long term
US passport holders enter Argentina without a visa for 90 days, extendable once for a similar period, and longer stays run through the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones: temporary residence of up to 3 years at a time for workers, rentiers and pensioners (both income categories tested at 5 minimum wages a month), investors, students and family, plus a 180 day digital nomad stay renewable once. Permanent residence follows 3 continuous years of temporary residence for non MERCOSUR nationals (2 years for MERCOSUR and associated states), or is direct for close family of Argentines and of permanent residents. Since the 2025 reform (DNU 366/2025), naturalization takes 2 years of continuous residence with no trip abroad at all and is granted by Migraciones rather than the courts, and a citizenship by investment program has been created, with applications announced for late 2026.

| Visa free tourist entry for US citizens (residente transitorio, turista) Tourist allowance | No visa and no income test for US passport holders entering as tourists. | Not applicable | No entry fee. The one time extension of the tourist stay costs 20 UMSM, ARS 20,000 at the UMSM value of ARS 1,000 set by Decreto 584/2024 (Dirección Nacional de Migraciones, RADEX fee table). | Granted at the port of entry. | 90 days on entry for US passport holders (Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores visa exemption list). The stay can reach 180 days with the one time extension below. | Extendable once, for up to 3 more months, at the Dirección Nacional de Migración (Decreto 616/2010, Art. 24 a)). The extension fee for non MERCOSUR nationals is 20 UMSM. After 180 days the visitor must leave or hold a residence category. | A tourist is admitted as a transitory resident, not under a temporary residence authorization, so the stay alone does not meet the income tax residence test for foreigners, which requires permanent residence or 12 months in the country under temporary residence authorizations (Ley 20.628, texto ordenado 2019, Art. 116 b)). The law separately treats a person who lives more than 6 months in the country in the fiscal year as a resident for its deduction rules (Art. 33). Argentine source income can be taxed whatever the status. | Does not lead to permanent residence. Time as a tourist does not count toward the 3 continuous years of temporary residence that open permanent residence (Decreto 616/2010, Art. 22 c)). | Citizenship by naturalization requires 2 years of continuous and legal residence with no departure from Argentina at all during the period (Ley 346, Art. 2, as replaced by DNU 366/2025). Tourist time is a transitory admission; in practice the 2 years are built on temporary or permanent residence. | 2026-10-15 | Official source |
| Digital nomad transitory residence (Nómades Digitales, Disposición DNM 758/2022) Digital nomad | No minimum income amount is set in Disposición 758/2022. The applicant must document the remote work activity with a contract, an employer endorsement or proof of demand for the services, plus income or fee receipts, and at least one professional reference. The USD 1,500 a month figure quoted by city promotion programs and blogs is not a requirement of the national rule. | Not applicable | Transitory residence fee for non MERCOSUR nationals: 32 UMSM, ARS 32,000 at the UMSM value of ARS 1,000 set by Decreto 584/2024 (DNM RADEX fee table). The one time extension under Art. 24 h) costs 40 UMSM, ARS 40,000. | No official decision deadline is published in Disposición 758/2022. | Up to 180 days per grant (Disposición DNM 758/2022, Art. 1). | Renewable once only, for an identical term of up to 180 days, so 12 months in total. Renewal requires proof of the income received for the services rendered during the first stay, an Argentine criminal record certificate, and having remained in Argentina for at least 50 percent of the first term (Disposición DNM 758/2022). | The nomad stay is a transitory admission, not a temporary residence authorization, so it does not by itself meet the 12 month temporary authorization test for tax residence (Ley 20.628, texto ordenado 2019, Art. 116 b)). A person who lives more than 6 months in the country in the fiscal year is treated as a resident for the law's deduction rules (Art. 33), and Argentine source income is taxable in any case. Pay from foreign clients for work done remotely is foreign source. | Does not lead to permanent residence. Transitory time does not count toward the 3 continuous years of temporary residence required for the category change to permanent residence (Decreto 616/2010, Art. 22 c)). | Citizenship by naturalization requires 2 years of continuous and legal residence with no departure from Argentina at all during the period (Ley 346, Art. 2, as replaced by DNU 366/2025). The nomad stay lasts at most 12 months and is a transitory admission, so it cannot complete the term by itself. | 2026-10-15 | Official source |

The category requires a real employment relationship in Argentina: the employer registers as a requirente with the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones and the employment contract is filed with the application. | Not applicable | ARS 118,800 in official fees: the 100 UMSM residence fee for non MERCOSUR nationals (ARS 100,000 at the UMSM value of ARS 1,000, Decreto 584/2024), plus ARS 14,000 for the DNI and ARS 4,800 for the Argentine criminal record certificate (DNM RADEX fee table, pagos.dnm.gov.ar). | No official decision deadline is published for in country applications. It takes effect from the month after the condition is met, and tax residents pay income tax on worldwide income. Salary for work performed in Argentina is Argentine source income from day one. | 3 continuous years of temporary residence for non MERCOSUR nationals, then a category change application to permanent residence (Decreto 616/2010, Art. 22 c)). Nationals of MERCOSUR and associated states need 2 years; the United States is not in that group. | 2 years of continuous and legal residence, with no departure from Argentina at all during the period; any trip abroad restarts the count (Ley 346, Art. 2, as replaced by DNU 366/2025). | 2026-10-15 | Official source |

The income must be a benefit from assets in the applicant's patrimony, such as financial instruments, real estate or company participations, or own funds held in foreign bank accounts with proven lawful origin; pay for personal work does not count. In family groups the amount must be proven for each applicant. The origin of the funds and their entry into Argentina must be shown through institutions authorized by the Central Bank (Decreto 616/2010, Art. 23 b)). | Not applicable. The official renewal procedure grants 1 year at a time (argentina.gob.ar). | Renewable while the income continues at or above 5 minimum wages, proven again at each renewal; the renewal is granted for 1 year and costs 100 UMSM, ARS 100,000 (argentina.gob.ar; DNM RADEX fee table). A temporary residence is cancelled when the holder remains outside Argentina for 6 months or more, subject to the exceptions in Ley 25.871, Art. 62 e), as replaced by DNU 366/2025. | Argentine tax residence begins on obtaining permanent residence, or after 12 months in the country under temporary residence authorizations, with temporary absences of up to 90 days not breaking the period (Ley 20.628, texto ordenado 2019, Art. 116 b)). Route notes
Digital nomad transitory residence (Nómades Digitales, Disposición DNM 758/2022): Only nationals of countries that do not require a tourist visa for Argentina may apply, which includes the United States. The stay is a transitory admission under Ley 25.871, Art. 24 h), and work is authorized only for persons or companies domiciled abroad. Applications are filed from abroad through the electronic entry procedure (Tramitación de Ingreso Electrónica) or from inside Argentina at a DNM office or through RADEX.
Temporary residence as a migrant worker (trabajador migrante): The category authorizes dependent employment in Argentina, with multiple entries and exits. The DNI for a temporary resident is issued for the same term as the residence and renewed with it (Ley 25.871, Arts. 30 and 32).
Temporary residence as a rentista (own income from abroad): Rentista income is passive by definition in the DNM rules: returns on the applicant's own assets, not remuneration for personal work. A rentista who wants to work for an Argentine employer needs the worker category instead.
Temporary residence as a pensioner (pensionado): Argentina has no separate retirement visa product; pensioners use this subcategory of temporary residence. A US Social Security benefit counts as a pension from a foreign government for this category, and must meet the same 5 minimum wage floor as any other pension.
Temporary residence as an investor (inversionista): This investor residence is separate from the citizenship by investment program created in 2025, which grants citizenship and not residence, and is covered in its own route on this page. An investor who also works in the business may need the file to show that role; the category itself is granted on the investment project.
Temporary residence as a student (estudiante): The category covers secondary, tertiary, university and recognized specialized studies at public or private institutions. Irregular status never bars admission to a school or university (Ley 25.871, Art. 7), but residence as a student requires the formal enrollment described here.
Residence by family reunification: Family reunification is a guaranteed right (Ley 25.871, Art. 10). The spouse, children and parents of an Argentine citizen are permanent residents by law (Ley 25.871, Art. 22). Official guidance also treats a registered cohabiting union (unión convivencial) with an Argentine or with a permanent or temporary resident as a qualifying family link. Family members of a temporary resident receive temporary residence for the same period as their relative (Decreto 616/2010, Art. 23, final paragraph).
Permanent residence (residencia permanente): Permanent residents may bring in personal effects, household goods and a car free of import taxes, within the limits set by the Executive (Ley 25.871, Art. 15). Holders of more than 30 years of residence in the country are exempt from the residence fee (Decreto 584/2024, Art. 5).
Citizenship by naturalization (carta de naturalización): Since May 29, 2025 the carta de naturalización is granted by the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones by administrative act, not by a federal judge, and applications filed before that date continue before the court where they were filed, under the rules in force when they began (DNU 366/2025, Arts. 37, 39 and 45). Continuous residence means remaining in the territory for the whole 2 years without a single departure abroad.
