South Africa Remote Work Visa: How to Apply in 2026

How to apply for South Africa's remote work visitor's visa: the real annual income test and what it works out to per month, where and how to lodge the application, how long the visa lasts, and when SARS registration applies. It also corrects two common claims about the monthly threshold and renewal.

The short version

South Africa's digital nomad route is a visitor's visa issued under section 11(1)(b)(iv) of the Immigration Act for the activity of remote work. It was created by amendments to the Immigration Regulations that took effect on October 9, 2024. Three numbers matter most. You need a gross salary of at least ZAR 650,796 a year from a foreign employer. The Department of Home Affairs fee is ZAR 425. The visa runs for more than 3 months and up to 3 years, and Home Affairs decides the exact length. Full route data for all South African visas is on the South Africa country page.

Two common claims that are wrong

The income test is not ZAR 100,000 a month. That would be ZAR 1,200,000 a year, and no such figure appears in the gazetted rules. An earlier 2024 proposal set the test at ZAR 1,000,000 a year, which is ZAR 83,333 a month. The figure that was gazetted, and that the Home Affairs checklist uses, is ZAR 650,796 a year.

The visa is not a renewable 3 year visa. Three years is the maximum grant, not a guaranteed term. Per the Home Affairs checklist, staying longer requires a new application. It is not a simple renewal.

The income math

The test is set per year: a gross salary of no less than ZAR 650,796 from a foreign employer. Divided by 12, that is ZAR 54,233 a month. You prove it with three months of bank statements, so those three months need to reflect at least ZAR 162,699 in gross salary (3 x ZAR 54,233).

There is one figure that often gets confused with this one. Some official fee material for the separate work visa points system prints ZAR 650,976 as a salary band boundary. That is a different provision, and some secondary sources quote it for this visa by mistake. The gap is ZAR 180 a year, or ZAR 15 a month. If your salary clears ZAR 650,976, you meet both figures, which takes the confusion off the table.

Who qualifies

Apply before you travel

US citizens can enter South Africa visa free for up to 90 days on a visitor's permit issued at the port of entry. That permit allows no work of any kind, and that includes remote work. If you plan to work from South Africa, have the remote work visa in hand before you fly.

Changing status inside South Africa is restricted. Per the Home Affairs checklist, a remote work visa holder may not switch to another visa while in the country, except in the exceptional circumstances prescribed for visitor's visas. The safest plan is to lodge the remote work application from the United States.

VFS Global and appointment booking

VFS Global runs the Department of Home Affairs visa application centers inside South Africa. You book an appointment online, pay, and then submit documents and biometrics in person. VFS also publishes the official requirements checklist for this visa. Applications lodged through VFS inside South Africa carry a VFS service fee on top of the ZAR 425 government fee. That service fee is reported at ZAR 1,350 but is not confirmed by an official source.

From the United States, South African consulates list a visitor's visa fee of USD 36, which is the US equivalent of the ZAR 425 Home Affairs fee.

Step by step

Processing time

Home Affairs publishes no processing time for this visa. The South African Consulate General says visas for stays longer than 90 days may take up to 3 to 4 weeks. Remote work applications are reported to take about 6 to 8 weeks in practice, but no official source confirms that. Plan around 8 weeks.

Tax: the 183 day registration rule

The visa has its own tax condition. The United States has a double taxation agreement with South Africa. Because of that, a US tax resident holder must register with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) if present in South Africa for more than 183 days in total during any 12 month period. The window is rolling, so count back 12 months from any given day, not by calendar year. If you arrive and stay continuously, registration applies from day 184. A holder who is not a tax resident of a treaty country must register with SARS no matter how long they stay.

Registering with SARS is not the same as becoming a South African tax resident. Tax residence arises in either of two ways. The first is being ordinarily resident, meaning South Africa is the country regarded as your real home. The second is the physical presence test, which requires all three of these: more than 91 days in the current tax year, more than 91 days in each of the five preceding tax years, and more than 915 days in total across those five years. The test spans six tax years, so a single 3 year grant cannot meet it unless you spent time in South Africa in earlier years. The ordinarily resident test has no day count, though, and can apply sooner. Residents are taxed on worldwide income. Non-residents are taxed only on South African source income.

What the visa does not lead to

Time on this visa does not count toward permanent residence, and the visa does not lead to citizenship. Permanent residence means qualifying separately under section 26 or 27 of the Immigration Act. Examples are a work visa, retired person status with lifelong guaranteed income of ZAR 37,000 a month, or financial independence with a net worth of ZAR 12,000,000. These routes are compared on the South Africa country page.

Before you apply

Rules, fees, and checklists change. Before you file, check the income figure, the full document list, and the fee against the current Home Affairs checklist published by VFS Global and the South African consulate that covers your state. Also confirm how that consulate takes applications and what it currently says about processing times.
